BeatleTracks with John Muzzy

BeatleTracks with John Muzzy

This past weekend on Saturday, Sept. 13, 2008, BeatleTracks played its last gig of the Summer 2008 season. Our regular drummer Bill Betz had a vexing scheduling conflict and just couldn't make the gig. On a whim, our own Ken Sandler called John Muzzy of Beatle Juice several weeks ago to see if he could guest drum for us.  He gladly agreed. We played the gig and what can I say? It was FAB-ulous!

John Muzzy is one of the founding members of the famous Beatle Tribute band Beatle Juice. He has also played with Fahrenheit among other notable Boston bands and teaches drumming to this day. He is truly a legendary Bostonian musical figure. Todd Rundgren's hit song "Band The Drum All Day" really does apply to Muzzy. He got his first drum kit at the age of 13 and hasn't stopped playing since.

The Gig: John's personal drum tech, Evan, showed up with the rest of us and set up Muzzy's drum kit and personal sound mixer. As well, Evan often accompanies Beatle Juice on percussion and he did so on this day. Interestingly, during the early moments of the sound checking, Evan sat down on Muzzy's drum kit and played with us. He was terrific. Looks like all those yeaers of lessons with John Muzzy has paid off. John arrived and we all introduced ourselves to each other. John was disarmingly laid back and friendly, totally down to earth and we all got down to business. Other than a few glitches we (BT's) occasionally experience, basically the gig went extremely well. A number of times I heard some yelling and screaming going on and when I looked, it was John Muzzy back there on the drum kit having the time of his life really getting into the songs. It was unique having John: He already plays most these songs with Beatle Juice, he checked out our YouTube videos to get familiar with our timing and for those songs that Beatle Juice doesn't play, Muzzy knew them anyway.

Opinion: What this correspondent has observed both in Liverpool and here in Boston is that there is a unique camaraderie among Beatle Tribute musicians. None of us want to see other bands play badly or have a rough time of it. We all root for each other and want all the bands and their gigs to go well. John Muzzy helping out BeatleTracks is just another example of this special magic. I don't mind saying that we were thrilled to have John back there drumming with us along with Evan doing the percussion sounds. It was a special experience and one we won't forget. We hope the feelings were mutual. Thanks John.

A Splendid Time was Guaranteed for all.

I would just like to formally express as one of his old students, Muzz is the best teacher to have. He is the most influential, sweet character that there is. Very down to earth, always consistent, and the two years I have played with him it was never boring. Muzz is by far the greatest teacher I've ever had, in my eyes, and I still thank him to this day for making me realize my potential. There may be many drummers out there who are the best of the best, but a true drummer realizes their hearts have a beat too.
