The Beatles "Get Back" Sessions - IX

The Beatles "Get Back" Sessions - IX

On this day, January 23, 1969, The Beatles continued the sessions in their new Apple Studios at 3 Saville Row. Oddly, the mood was buoyant with all four band members. Go figure. Let's see what happened. *signals a personal opinion from your humble correspondant.

The rehearsals on this day were largely dominated by extensive work on "Get Back." Although the main session was relatively quick, lasting only four hours, the mood was happy with all four Fabs laughing, joking and getting along like the old days. Why that was so remains a happy mystery to all. Of course Billy Preston was there so that was a definite positive dynamic and emollient to the usual friction within the Beatles. Interestingly, there was another unique aspect to this session: it was actually split into two sessions; the four hours that were caught on film rehearsing "Get Back" and a later night session without the film crew so the Beatles could earnestly record versions of "I've Got a Feeling" and "Dig A Pony" to be committed to a future, as yet unamed LP.

The session tapes reveal that as they are plowing through Paul's "Get Back" he shouts out enthusiastically to John to take a solo. John is pleasantly surprised but makes a stab at it. The rest of the day, John works on his solo. *Opinion: the effect of this on George is unknown. Already alienated by his bandmates on many fronts and the supposed lead ace in the group, having Paul give the solo to John may have caused more heartache for George. On the other hand, it may have been construed by all as Paul really trying to bond with his long time writing partner and keep John engaged in the sessions. Lennon's now notorious disengagement from these sessions have been an absolute plague on the band and the sessions. A highly creative genius like Lennon pulling out of a project, any project, has to, by definition, cripple the overall effort.

At one point, Paul makes a tasteles joke about the Hong Kong Flu then sweeping England. No one is amused. More amusing albeit sad, was John's counter joke as a solution to the Flu: everyone should take more drugs! At the time, this was no doubt Lennon's answer to everything in life. Paul continues to lead the band through "Get Back" and they continue to have a blast doing it, including Preston.

The group next attempts "I've Got A Feeling" and the whole thing collapses into laughter. At that, John attempts to sing "HELP!" and that breaks down into hysterics. John and Paul continue to poke fun at themselves by attempting their 1963 hit "Please Please Me." They laugh so hard they can't even get through the first verse.

The day's session ends amiably and the group seems a bit more focused and ready to get serious about committing some of these new songs to recording tape and stop making hash out of them.
